Group B Strep

PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD GET TESTED FOR GBS BACTERIA.

Doctors and midwives use a sterile swab (“Q-tip”) to collect a sample from the vagina and the rectum. They send the sample to a laboratory for testing. Women who test positive for GBS bacteria are not sick. However, they can pass the bacteria to their babies during birth.

  • About 1 in 4 pregnant women has GBS bacteria in their body.

  • Doctors and midwives should test pregnant women for GBS bacteria when they are 36 through 37 weeks pregnant.

  • Giving pregnant women who carry GBS bacteria antibiotics through the vein (IV) during labor can prevent most cases of GBS disease in newborns during the first week of life.

Group B Streptococci (GBS), is the most common cause of life-threatening bacterial infection in human newborns. Affected newborns include preterm, low birth weight, and full-term infants. These bacteria are Gram-positive, β-hemolytic, chain-forming cocci.

GBS FORMS A CHAIN - COCCUS/COCCI MEANS ROUND - GRAM POSITIVE?

Gram-positive bacteria are bacteria classified by the color they turn in the staining method. Hans Christian Gram developed the staining method in 1884. The staining method uses crystal violet dye, which is retained by the thick peptidoglycan cell wall found in gram-positive organisms. This reaction gives gram-positive organisms a blue color when viewed under a microscope.
