Magnesium (Mg) and Potassium (K+)

Updated: May 9, 2024

Magnesium influences potassium channels and can regulate its placental transport. Despite the use of supplementation, many women have inadequate Mg levels. Magnesium deficiency during pregnancy can result in hypertension, pre-eclampsia, painful muscle contraction, and migraines. In addition, Mg deficiency increases the risk of premature birth, gestational diabetes, and fetal growth disorders. Increased Mg intake during pregnancy is associated with increased birth weight.

How much magnesium should a pregnant woman consume daily?

RDA: The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults 19-51+ years is 400-420 mg daily for men and 310-320 mg for women.

Pregnancy requires about 350-360 mg daily and lactation, 310-320 mg.

How much potassium should a pregnant woman consume daily?

The U.S. Dietary Reference Intakes state that there is not enough evidence to establish a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for potassium. However, the National Academy of Medicine has established an Adequate Intake (AI) for potassium.

For pregnant and lactating women, the AI ranges from 2,500-2,900 depending on age.

It is estimated that the average daily intake of potassium in adults is about 2,320 mg for women and 3,016 mg for men. [2]
